Fighting Unusually High Malnutrition Rates in Chad and Preparing for Worse
As a food crisis continues to spread and levels of severe acute malnutrition continue to rise in Chad, MSF is expanding the number of emergency malnutrition treatment programs it is operating in the country. Even in a normal year, Chad has one of the highest rates of chronic malnutrition in the world. This year is showing signs of being worse than usual. In early 2012, in some areas of the country, rates of global acute malnutrition as high as 24 percent have already been reported among children under the age of five.
Why are there such alarming rates of malnutrition in Biltine?
February is the beginning of the hunger gap in Chad, when families traditionally begin to run out of their food stocks. This year MSF found high rates of severe acute malnutrition rates among children under five, because only 46 percent of the harvest required to feed the population was harvested, which is well below the average. Many Chadians who worked in Libya also lost their jobs and returned home. Those men have moved to other parts of Chad to find work, but the salaries are much lower, so they are sending home less money.

The world needs to know.
Santa Monica Sunset Sky (Waiting)
I sit on the Beach foot in Sand;
And I wait for the waves to come.
There are different kind of waves;
Waves of emotions,
Waves of circumstances,
Waves of blessings,
Waves of laughter.
But I was not waiting for these waves.
Cause I have seen them all before.
I waited for that special moment of rest,
that moment that would surpass them all.
A keep-sake to take with me when I leave the shore,
to return to my ever waking life.

Donna Summer - Hot Stuff
I don’t normally listen to this kind of music, but I can say for sure I’ve had great moments with this on the player.
Donna, this one is for you and all your fans.

Window
Inside it’s dark and dreamy
As we wake to a new day.
Outside our window the world is ahead of us;
Bright, beaming, full of hope and adventure.

I leave dreams on my pillow
I sit on the edge of my bed before I lie.
Time will come to me as I wait on the dust to settle.
For there are visions that linger on;
Distinctive images of the gods.
Laying down their gifts to man,
As they ascend upwards toward the sky.
The air is thick with smoke;
As men on chariots blare their trumpets,
In chase after the wind to bring them speed.
But mortality clings at their heels.
Gravity reigns into them bringing them to their knees.
And so, I sit and listen for the wind to speak to my ear.
I listen to the tides of time,
to give me vision before I lie.

nprmusic:Music=Life
If you have not seen the video of Henry, an elderly Alzheimer’s patient in an American nursing home, suddenly become revived by hearing the music of his youth through an iPod, then stop whatever you’re doing and watch it. A week later, it still makes me tear up.
The clip is part of a documentary called Alive Inside, which follows social worker Dan Cohen as he creates personalized iPod playlists for people in elder care facilities, hoping to reconnect them with the music they love. Cohen tells NPR’s Melissa Block that the video of Henry is a great example of the link between music and memory.

SEARCHING….
The root lies beneath the tree as
it is the nature of it’s being.
For it pines for water.
To want it.
To need it.
So it is with man.
To seek something mired
beneath the source of desire.
To drink from the sap of
inspiration to help him grow.
To help him know.
But what is the consequence,
When one drinks from bitter vine?
What will redeem you?
What will release you?
For this is the plight of your own choosing.
You drown in your own myriad of dreams.
The longing for justice yet undone.
And it will leave you digging in,
gasping on air as an anchor.
And each moment will seem longer than
the next.
But there is no answer.

And give you purpose.
And all that you do

Rooted, from whats within you.

The Love within you.

The Winner Is
DeVotchKa and Mychael Danna
soundboard: DeVotchKa - “The Winner Is”
The number one word I’d use to describe DeVotchKa’s music is “hopeful.” I don’t know what it is exactly, but something about them makes me feel so damn optimistic whenever listen, especially when it comes to this song. Like me, you might’ve discovered them after they scored the cult classic Little Miss Sunshine, or maybe you discovered them when they went on one of their first tours with pin-up icon Dita Von Teese (They originally started off playing the backing music at burlesque shows. From humble beginnings, as they say.). Either way, their charm is undeniable, and every time I hear their accordions or plucky violins I can’t help but feel content, even if it’s just for the duration of the song. Hopefully you’ll feel the same.
See you next Wednesday!
